Ngmayem 2015

His Excellency the Vice President Amissah Arthur, Honorable Regional Minister, Minister of State, Members of the Diplomatic Corp, Flag bearers and their entourage, Invited Guests, Ladies and Gentlemen

Nene Konor of Manya KroboLet us give thanks to God for this day, for bringing us to this milestone. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome you all especially the Vice President Kwesi Amissah Arthur for your genuine commitment to our nation, and all other important dignitaries to this year’s Ngmayem festival. Whether you are visiting or a homegrown son or daughter I want to say to all of you OKLIBONI.

It has been a year of full of major successes and some challenges as one would expect however, we have so much to be cheerful about . Today is an important time for families to enjoy themselves and engage in somber reflection of our history, our family obligations and where we are heading. Most of you have not been home for so many years due to other pertinent obligations whiles others over the years felt reluctant to visit home. Taking time out to be with your families and friends today is still very encouraging indeed.

During the year we have been blessed with so many important projects especially in the area of Education which are worth mentioning to you all. On behalf of the people of Manya Krobo I want to extend our sincerest gratitude and appreciation to national government. The following are some of the areas of progress government is supporting and assisting.

  1. AKRO SECTECH- work on Boys dormitory and Teachers bungalows will commence soon.

  2. MANYA KROBO HIGH SCHOOL- is getting a girls dormitory, all approved. Work to start by year end.

  3. AKUSE METHODIST- work would start soon on a Boys dormitory. All set to go but debating on the site.

  4. OBORPAH DAY SNR HIGH SCHOOL- work is still ongoing. We are hoping that by year end the project should be ready for classes. This project is among the first fifty and is no reason for the tardiness. We cannot wait any longer on the contractor.

  5. SEKESUA DAY SNR HIGH SCHOOL- work on the modalities still ongoing. Chances are construction would start by the end of year.

  6. ASESEWA SNR HIGH SCHOOL- technical personnel to evaluate the current status of the abandoned assembly hall/ dining hall project with the objective of resuming work.

Enormous progress is being made in all these areas and again we wish o express appreciation for these efforts. I want to Vice president of Ghana Pays respect to Nene Konor of Manya Kroboassure the government that the people of Manya Krobo are aware of the admonition of the late American President, John F. Kennedy who during his inauguration in that 1961 admonished the American people to “ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country”. Mr. Vice President I want to express that we are aware of efforts being made by government and at the same time recognize our obligation towards self help as well.

There are serious ongoing problems facing the people of Manya Krobo today and must be dealt with as soon as possible:

  1. Water availability has been a big problem. Although we supply water from Kpong to Tema and the other parts of Accra, and from Bukunor to Koforidua and beyond, we still do not enjoy adequate water supply here in Lower Manya Krobo municipality. There are frequent cut offs which end up impeding the lives of the average people. We have made so many ‘painful’ contributions towards the development of our nation and we deserve free water supply into our homes. We believe adequate water supply is a small appeasement for our nation’s growth and history.

The Bunkonor water plant in Upper Manya Krobo does NOT supply water to any of the homes in Upper Manya. Not even a drop of water. I am therefore appealing to government to make sure that my son and daughters in that part of Krobo Nation get their fair share of water supply adequately. It is a must.

  1. Our feeder roads are still bad shape especially the farming villages where foodstuffs are transported to the market places. They need rehabilitation so badly. Sekesua road is so dangerous that the town is gradually losing  its market to other markets due to transportation problem.

  2. About 125 years ago, the colonial government took away our land supposedly with frenzy excuses and I quote, “ “. Over the years my predecessor appealed to the then Busia government to return that parcel land back to us but it fell on death years. Since I became Konor I followed suite and sent to you several appeals the latest one in May this year to the president but have not heard back from the president. I am still waiting anxiously.

Vice president making a speech

Now to my people, for almost two years now we lost our beloved Queen, Nana Mamle Okleyo and it has been a challenge to get another dedicated Queen to step in her shoes to continue with the same dedication however, the good news is that we have a new vibrant Queen of Manya Krobo now, Nana Aplam II. She was installed last week Tuesday and had the outdooring this past Monday, on the Yokoma Day. You must all join me to welcome our new Queen with open arms and wish Queen mother of manya kroboher all the best. She will obviously need your support completely positioned for the challenges. God Bless. Nana Manye is a teacher by profession and currently a headmistress in a basic school. She has a Bachelor of Education Degree from the university of Education, Winneba. In the same vein as the installation of the Pope i would say “HABEMUS Nana”.

At this point in time I would like to point out that our Community Centre is almost completed, thanks to Manya Krobo Foundation and all other donors who have helped in several ways through cash and kind to reach this stage. Last weekend we inaugurated the  management committee that will oversee the upkeep of the facility, and Dr. E.A.Narh of Narh-bita Hospital, is the Chairman.

As we move along I still maintain that we as a nation are in danger of lawlessness and injustice. A few months ago in May I delivered a speech at the Roman Catholic Church of Agormanya, Odumase Krobo, 75th anniversary which I lamented that we are in danger of losing our brightest minds to juju people due to injustice in the country. Legal fees are so expensive to the average Ghanaian and therefore could not afford the judicial system anymore, whiles some judges are also selling “justice”. Low and behold a day after my concern I was voiced out, it was stated in the papers that a judge sent some people to the juju house to approve their innocence before returning to his court. Then furthermore, quite recently some judges were really caught in the act of taking ‘kickbacks’. What in the world are we up to? Our judicial system is pushing people gradually out of the system to take the easy way out, that is go to juju house in search of justice? This is scary for this nation.

Audience Just last week Friday Moderator of my church, the Presbyterian Church of Ghana resigned from the church due to a misunderstanding. This becomes serious to see our spiritual leaders resigning from their post. Where does that leave us anyway? Which side are you on, the Lord’s side or your own-in Krobo we ask-“Aniwe lo Bosowe”. What lesson do we get from this as believers of the gospel and especially the youth?

Finally though, does somebody really care about the rural communities of Ghana at all? I have been traveling to our hinterland lately and I see so much poverty which gets to me severely. But the outside world keeps on lamenting that Ghana reached the middle income level now, really? We have our work cut out for us. We need to do more to stamp out poverty completely from our society and it can be done. Others have done it with a targeted plan. We really need leadership with integrity on this. We have the best minds to take up this challenge.

We have a Nursing School now, thanks to Dr. Nuertey. Classes would begin soon within the next two weeks; I hope all interested students have applied for admission accordingly. The first of its kind in Adangbe Nation.

Last but not list, last year I was pleased to announce the beginning of plans for an eye clinic in Odumase through the support of Nene Detse and the Lions Club of Toronto, Canada. After much review we have decided to expand our plans. We still be exploring the feasibility of a multipurpose Health Centre that incorporates Psychological Counseling, Eye Care, Maternal Health Care, Primary Care, Community Health promotion and researches.

To the youth, I want to encourage you to keep on keeping on even against the immense pressure of our society. Today is Ngmayem we celebrate our history, we celebrate our heritage here, we celebrate the lives of our ancestors here and beyond. Let it be said that we did our best for our generation, that we made a difference.

Have a glorious NGMAYEM Festival.

OKLIBONI
